Grandfather Mountain

Part state park and part non-profit tourist attraction, Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak on the eastern face of the Blue Ridge Mountain range.  Its rocky summit has an elevation of 5,946 feet.  On a clear day, you can see Charlotte 90 miles off in the distance. Until 2008, Grandfather Mountain was privately owned and its tourist attractions were operated for profit.  In 2008, the state purchased the undeveloped part of the mountain and turned it into a state park.  Ownership of the developed portion was transferred to a newly created non-profit.  Today, the back country trails are part of …

The Quarry at Carrigan Farms

DSC_0481

Located about 30 minutes north of Charlotte in Mooresville, Carrigan Farms is a 5th generation family-owned farm.  With pick your own strawberries in the summer and pumpkins and hayrides in the fall, it is one of several farms to choose from in the Charlotte area for a fun family outing.  But Carrigan Farms also has a feature that is completely unique – a natural, spring-fed body of water known as The Quarry. In the 1960s, this area of the farm was quarried for granite stone used to build I-77.  After mining half a million tons of granite, they struck a …

Cedar Lake Tree Farm

DSC_0135

Much to the chagrin of my husband, we have gone to the same Christmas tree lot in Charlotte for as long as we have lived here.  He wants nothing more than to go to the little lot at the church across the street from us, but I prefer a large lot with a huge selection and some additional holiday decorations and festivities.  And I like the tradition of going to the same place every year.  I have pictures of the boys sitting on the same sleigh in the same lot for the last 7 years and it’s fun to see …

Chinese Lantern Festival at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens

DSC_0790

Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is one of our favorite places.  Located in Belmont, NC, the gardens are about 20 miles and 40 minutes from Charlotte.  Although they claim to be easily accessible from either I-85 or I-77, the reality is that it is pretty far off both highways.  But don’t let that stop you.  It is well worth the trip. We have visited the gardens probably a dozen times over the years for everything from class field trips to seeing the Christmas lights to just enjoying a beautiful spring day wandering the grounds.  When they announced a new event this …

Green River Cove Tubing

On our way back to Charlotte from Lake Lure, we decided to stop and take the kids river tubing for the first time. They were super excited to give it a try. We found a few different places online and ended up at Green River Cove Tubing based on reviews and location.  We packed a picnic lunch, checked out of our house on Lake Lure, and headed about thirty minutes southwest. After eating a quick lunch in the back of the car, we got our tubes and life jackets for the kids and hopped on a bus that took us …

Lake Lure

Lake Lure is a man-made lake located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.  Its beautiful scenery is well-known in Hollywood and dozens of movies have been filmed here, including scenes from The Last of the Mohicans, Forrest Gump, and Dirty Dancing.  There is tons to do in the area, from swimming in the lake to hiking to the top of Chimney Rock.  It’s a great getaway weekend from Charlotte. This was our second trip to Lake Lure and both times we have rented a house with a group of friends in Rumbling Bald Resort.  The …

Sky Top Orchard

Charlotte is ideally situated for day or weekend trips to the mountains.  Drive about two hours west and you’ll find yourself at higher altitudes, cooler temperatures, and more mountainous terrain.  One of our favorite fall activities is to head into the mountains to pick apples. For years we went to Apple Hill Orchard in Morganton, mostly because it was the closest.  The kids always had fun there and the apples were good, but with so many other choices nearby, we decided it was time to explore somewhere new.  With the kids a little older, we were ready to check out …

US National Whitewater Center

IMG_9431

The U.S. National Whitewater Center opened in Charlotte in 2006 and has been “dedicated to the promotion of the active lifestyle” ever since.  The center features the world’s largest man-made whitewater river but has so much more to offer.  With dozens of land and water based activities, there is something for everyone here. We visited the Whitewater Center for the first time in 2008 with RB in a baby carrier and Wrigley on a leash.  We explored some of the trails and fell in love with the place.  It was amazing to us that this mecca of outdoor activity existed …

AW Shucks

Fall is my favorite time of year, and North Carolina is an amazing place to be in the fall.  The foliage is gorgeous, the weather is perfect, and we could spend every weekend outside doing something different.  Living close to the mountains and close to farmland, there is no shortage of fall activities in the area. Our favorite annual tradition is going to AW Shucks farm in Monroe, NC.  Our first visit was in 2010 when the boys were 9 months and 2.5 years old, and we have been back every year since.  Check out these munchkins on their first …

Carolina Harbor

IMG_5767

Straddling the North and South Carolina border, Carowinds is just a hop, skip and a jump away from most areas of Charlotte.  We’ve gone many times over the years, enjoying Planet Snoopy, the younger kids section of the park.  But for years I kept a big secret from my kids… Carowinds has a water park!  Seriously, they had no idea whatsoever that it was there.  It’s not hard to avoid if you come in the North Gate and stay in Planet Snoopy.  When they were little I just didn’t want to deal with the stress of a water park.  But …
