After our combined whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier tour, our tour guide offered to drop us off in town or back at the dock. Our immediate family opted to eat lunch and explore town, while the extended family went back to the boat. Corey gave us a few lunch suggestions and we took off exploring. Juneau is Alaska’s state capital. Surrounded by the rugged Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, Juneau cannot be reached by land. Like Skagway, the town got its start during the Gold Rush days, although it played a much smaller role in the gold rush. I didn’t …

Juneau Excursion – Mendenhall Glacier
After we finished our whale watching adventure, another tour guide (Corey) from Alaska Galore Tours picked us up from the harbor to take us to Mendenhall Glacier. Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area is only about 5 miles from Auke Bay Harbor, so it was a quick trip to get there. Corey dropped us off and went to park the van. The glacier was literally right there. I was stunned at how close we were and how beautiful it looked. It’s tough to beat a view like this right off the parking lot of a recreation area. Mendenhall Glacier is 13 miles …
Juneau Excursion – Whale Watching
Whale watching was a high priority for us on our Alaska trip. I knew we wanted to get a more personalized experience and go out on a smaller boat. We wanted a relaxed, easy viewing experience and didn’t want to be jostling for position on deck with 50 or more people. After pricing out various small boats, we discovered that booking a private excursion for our group of 10 was a very reasonable option. We booked ours through Alaska Galore Tours. It was another super foggy day when we docked in Juneau. In fact, we could barely see the shore …
Chilkoot Charters and Tours Review
For our Skagway port day, we booked the Yukon Rail & Bus Excursion with Dogcart Experience with Chilkoot Charters & Tours. The excursion cost $235 for adults (13+) and $175 for kids (0-12). It included lunch, train tickets, dogcart ride, and pickup and drop-off at the dock. The tour was a full day, lasting 7.5 hours. The tour was offered at two different times – the “train first” excursion left at 7:30 am and the “bus first” excursion left at 9:15 am. We chose the “bus first”, both because we liked the later start time and because we figured that the …
Downtown Skagway
Skagway was our longest port day (7:15 am to 8:00 pm), so even though we had a 7.5 hour excursion we still had plenty of time to explore the town. After getting off the White Pass & Yukon Route train, we walked down Broadway, the main road through town. Broadway ends in the Port of Skagway. Historic buildings line the street leading to the cruise ships, with Mount Harding standing tall in the background. The street is lined with Gold Rush era buildings and wooden boardwalks, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Two of the town’s most …
Skagway Excursion – White Pass and Yukon Route
When gold was discovered in the Klondike River in 1896, it set off the Klondike Gold Rush. Some 100,000 stampeders came to the area between 1896 and 1899 in search of gold. They had two options to get to the Klondike, located some 600 miles from Skagway over treacherous mountains: the Chilkoot Trail or the White Pass Trail. The Chilkoot Trail was shorter but steeper, and since the Canadian government required each person to carry a year’s worth of supplies (weighing roughly one ton) on their journey, it was extremely challenging. The White Pass Trail was longer but less steep. …
Skagway Excursion – Caribou Crossing
Although our Skagway excursion was about the journey more than the destination, the Caribou Crossing Trading Post was the main stop along the way. We had lunch there, took a dogcart ride, played with puppies, and explored the trading post. Formerly known as Frontierland, Caribou Crossing Trading Post is a tourist attraction just north of Carcross. There is nothing historic or authentic about it, although it has an old-timey feel. It exists simply for tourism. The main draw (for us at least) was the sled dog puppies and dog cart rides, but there are also two museums (the Wildlife Museum …
Skagway Excursion – Klondike Highway
We booked the “Yukon Rail & Bus Excursion with Dogcart Experience” with Chilkoot Charters & Tours for our Skagway port day. (Read my full review of the tour company here.) We opted for the “bus first” tour, which started later and would frontload the more active part of the trip, allowing the kids to rest on the train ride home. We met our (surprisingly Irish) tour guide Anne at the end of the cruise ship dock and boarded the bus. Driving out of Skagway, she gave us a brief history of the town. We learned about the masses of people …
Dawes Glacier
Glacier Day! A slow, scenic cruising through a fjord to a glacier is a key feature of all Alaska cruises. The most sought-after glacier cruising in Alaska is Glacier Bay, but the National Park Service only issues a limited number of permits to cruise ships each year and Disney Cruise Line does not have any of them. For years, Disney has had Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glacier on their itinerary, but after several cruise seasons of being iced out of that narrow fjord, they officially changed their destination to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier for the 2019 cruising season. Of …
Alaska Trip Planning
We started our “decade of travel” with the kids in 2016 – the year my husband and I turned 40 and the year my oldest turned 8 (meaning he had 10 years left before leaving for college). Our goal during this time period is to take one big trip a year (preferably international) and as many small trips as we can fit in to explore locally and nationally. Alaska has long been on our bucket list, and we decided an Alaskan cruise leaving from Vancouver, Canada would fit the bill perfectly for 2019’s big trip. 2019 also happened to be …
