Atlanta is a great long weekend trip from Charlotte. You can easily fill 3-4 days there with kid-friendly activities. Check out my Atlanta family travel tips below for help planning your own visit.
Get the Atlanta CitiPASS.
Save money and time waiting on lines by buying the Atlanta CitiPASS. The pass gives you access to 5 of Atlanta’s top tourist attractions. You’ll save money if you go to at least 4 of them.
Stay downtown.
This actually goes against the traditional advice. Everyone will tell you NOT to stay downtown because it shuts down at 5:00 and offers little in the way of shopping and dining. But for a shorter trip where your main focus is the top 4 attractions (Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, CNN, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights), you can’t beat the ease and convenience of one of the downtown hotels.
Don’t miss Centennial Olympic Park.
I knew we wanted to walk through here but had no idea how much fun the kids would have. If you are there in warmer months, the Fountain of Rings is a must. Even older kids will love running through the fountains to cool off.
Expose your kids to civil rights history in the city.
For older elementary aged kids and up, Atlanta provides an amazing opportunity to learn about the civil rights movement. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights is a powerful museum that will open your kids’ eyes, hearts and minds to the struggles that so many face. If you have more time, there are additional sites such as Martin Luther King’s birthplace and the Sweet Auburn neighborhood that are worth exploring too.
Get outdoors.
Between the aquarium and museums, Atlanta has a lot of great indoor attractions. But don’t forget to go outside! Whether visiting one of the city’s many parks or venturing outside the city to Stone Mountain, the Atlanta outdoors has a lot to offer too.
Go to the Aquarium.
Just go. You won’t regret it.
