Although it was the first port on our Alaskan cruise, Skagway is actually the northernmost point on the DCL itinerary. The town is most famous for its role in the Klondike Gold Rush. Gold was discovered along the Klondike River in 1896 and Skagway was soon overrun with gold prospectors who used the town as a launching point for their journey over the mountains on the White Pass trail. The stampede lasted only 2 years but brought some 100,000 migrants to the area hoping to strike it rich.
Skagway was the one port where I knew immediately which excursion I wanted to do. I knew we wanted to see the Yukon, ride the scenic White Pass Railway, and play with sled dog puppies. We were able to have all this rolled into one big 7.5 hour excursion with Chilkoot Charters.
