Because we live further from DC than my sister, we ended up staying an extra night to make the trip worth the drive and to avoid driving home in the middle of the night. I wanted to find one more activity that we could do that last morning but didn’t want to pay the high prices to stay in the city another night. I did some research on sites outside the city and decided that George Washington’s Mount Vernon would be the perfect add-on.
Mount Vernon is the estate of George and Martha Washington. The grounds are massive and include the mansion, outbuildings, farm, gardens, museum, and tomb. Tickets are $20 adults / $12 kids 6-11 and include a timed entry tour of the mansion. Ordering tickets online ahead of time can save you a few dollars.
On their website under the “Explore Mount Vernon” section, it says simply “There’s so much to see and do at Mount Vernon.” And they are absolutely right! We stayed much longer than I had planned and even then I had to drag the kids away. I think this ended up being the boys’ absolute favorite thing we did in DC.
